St. Augustine and the Problem of Evil from a Christian Basis In his Confessions, St. Augustine writes about a large number of topics that continue to have relevance today. The text documents the development of Augustines faith and his Christian philosophy, and one thing of particular interest is his origin for the temper of evil. Christianity predicates several important sentiments that Augustine builds upon in his philosophy, and within its context, he presents a thorough, compelling argument against the problem of evil that identifies evil as a misperception. Augustine prototypal characterizes God based on how he experiences Gods presence and qualities. Augustine searches for Him unsuccessfully in the physical world, and the physical universe for that matter, and then decides that he mustiness look within himself to find God. His description of God illustrates the ideas in Christianity that God is omnipotent and entirely good, or all-loving. (Augustine, 123) Augustine clearly conveys the magnitude of God and his greatness, which exceed the comprehension of mans mind. This is perhaps the most important quality of Gods being, which properly coincides with His descriptions in Christianity, because it establishes a scale for measuring the qualities of God that He instilled in his creations. Augustine next discusses three aspects that define God for him. From that point, they grow until they are able to feed from Gods goodness, and then th ey achieve the supreme goodness and become one with God. on that point is, then, no problem in evil because it in fact is good. Ultimately, it is impossible to know exactly the reasonablenesss for Gods actions. His qualities are such that He transcends being, and a persons best effort to understand God can at best give him or her approximate understanding. Only through reason and discovery of the truth can a person grow until, finally, he or she is transformed by God into His Being. To Resurrect a GhostCartesian dualism has largely been replaced by empirical theories of the mind. Free will is also unsufferable without the assumption of a metaphysical self, it universe the ghost in the machine after all. As for consciousness, it is presupposed by the empirical. What counts as physical manifestations of mind are the cause or causes of phenomenal experience. Without this criterion the individual is a unity, it being impossible to separate the psychological since effectively it encompasses every aspect of the individual. Additionally, it is in phenomenal e xperience that the empirical is observed, and observation is the basis of empirical verification. To advocate the scientific method of intersubjective verification while denying the existence or significance of the phenomenal is inconsistent. At root, the cordial attributes are ontologically distinct. Limited to only one ontological substance, empiricists either redefine or exclude troublesome attributes, commiting the error of confusing distinct kinds of substances. Dualism can let in all of the properties of mind in a single coherent theory by acknowledging these kinds of substances.IPerhaps the most influential recent philosopher of mind is Gilbert Ryle. All topics in experience being contingent, a condition for their existence is presupposed. This condition in turn can always be understoo d as the real thing since it is more basic. Acceptance of this is mistaken because the condition for it can now be understood as the real thing and so on. With no way of avoiding this process, resolution is possible only by simply understanding mind as some one alternative. All concepts being potentially infinite, their extent is circumscribed by denomination in order to avoid indeterminacy. Each constituent conceptualization composes an autonomous representation of mind in this way, a different way of considering it. As such every one individually is a sufficient condition for the whole, mind being conceivable in terms of any one.
